Jessica Drew’s father was a visionary scientist who dreamed of someday combining the adaptive abilities of the spider with human genes. In that way, he thought that mankind would be able to survive its own technological devastation. His theory was put to the test when his daughter, who was dying of radiation poisoning, was placed in his Genetic Accelerator.

Years later, his daughter would grow up with powers she did not understand. She had incredible strength, could stick to walls, and was able to generate “venom bolts” from her own biosystem. These powers caused others to fear her, and she escaped their wrath only when she was recruited into Hydra. There she honed her skills and appeared, for the first time (in Marvel Spotlight #32), as a Hydra villain. She soon learned the true nature of Hydra, however, and turned against them. Afterward, she became a super-hero, appearing here in her first solo series.
